Autor de diarios de vida y empleado público inglés. Pepys nació en una familia modesta, y en 1659 fue nombrado empleado del Ministerio de Hacienda, donde el 1 de enero de 1660 comenzó a redactar el diario por el que se le conoce. Su posición mejoró con el tiempo, al punto de que llegó a ser secretario en el Ministerio de Marina, miembro del parlamento, presidente de la Royal Society, confidente de Carlos II y Jacobo II, y amigo de los grandes intelectuales de su época. Su diario, que escribió hasta 1669 y que se publicó en 1825, ofrece una imagen fascinante de la vida política y de la alta sociedad de Londres bajo la Restauración, e incluye descripciones vívidas y veraces de acontecimientos ordinarios y extraordinarios, tales como la Plaga y el gran incendio de Londres.
